Job Description
About the role:
Adeia is seeking an experienced patent professional to contribute to the success of its media IP Licensing business. As Adeia expands its licensing activities into segments that include the automotive, e-commerce, ad-tech, and gaming industries, the company is seeking experienced, motivated, energetic & proactive team-players to add to its IP Rights Management team to assist in licensing its innovative technologies in these markets.
Exemplary technologies include: UI, heads-up displays, navigation units, in-cabin monitoring, connectivity (including OTA, IoT, on-demand services & content streaming), operating systems, telematics, networking, data management platforms, ad-serving, client-server communications, analytics, and AR/VR technologies.
Primary Duties:
• Patent claims assertion: preparing and presenting patent-related infringement analyses in patent licensing negotiations.
• Patent mining: identification of patents relevant to a particular target from existing portfolio, coordinating patent analysis to demonstrate quality of Adeia portfolio; mine portfolio for additional patents to unlock new value from portfolio.
• Infringement detection: analysis of competitor and target products and coordinating reverse engineering; liaising with technical experts.
• Claim charting: developing compelling evidence that clearly demonstrates target company infringement.
• Manage outside counsel in patent mining and claim chart development.
• Licensing package development: building presentation decks that comprehensively show need for a patent license.
• Presentation of charts and patent portfolio materials and comprehensive defense of portfolio in licensing discussions.
• Preparing and presenting responses to non-infringement and invalidity positions.
• Communication of outcomes from licensing discussions with patent portfolio group to enhance development of patent portfolio.
• Liaising with litigation and patent prosecution functions to ensure strategy and portfolio alignment with licensing strategy.
• Conducting due diligence review in connection with potential patent acquisitions.
Qualifications:
• Exceptional legal and negotiation skills.
• Substantial intellectual property experience (7+ years) with an emphasis on patent licensing, litigation and prosecution.
• Significant background in preparing and presenting patent-related analyses in patent licensing negotiations, IP opinions, pretrial and trial activities, appeals and settlements for complex high technology patent cases.
• Experience in patent litigation, acquisitions and/or opinions and portfolio development.
• Undergraduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or substantially similar technical field from a top-rated university.
• Eligibility to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
• Technical industry experience in either automotive or ad-tech industries.
• Excellent drafting, communication, and project management skills.
• A broad understanding and knowledge of technologies, including but not limited to: Internet-related technologies, infotainment and/or telematics systems, advertising & analytics, AI, and consumer electronics technologies.
• Ability to manage fast-paced workload and add value to multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work independently and understand market applicability of inventions.
• Motivated professional with high standards who desires to show ownership and commitment to the job, and who can work effectively across departments.
• JD preferred (from a top law school).
