Job Purpose

Lead Analyst - Indirect Tax Audits & Advisory - this role reports to the US Indirect and Employment Tax Director (who oversees sales & use, gross receipts, fuel, excise, and employment tax) and is a lead member of the audit defense and conflict resolution team overseeing external indirect tax audits conducted by state and local tax authorities, while working in a hybrid environment. This role also leads business partnering efforts across the broader organization and supports technological and transformational initiatives that will advance the US Indirect Tax function, as well as provides technical tax advice in support of business transactions

Key Accountabilities

• Providing audit strategy and delivering successfully resolved indirect tax audits (sales, use, and gross receipts tax audits).
• Leading indirect tax audits and interacting with state and local tax authorities and providing comprehensive and effective replies to audit inquiries.
• Attaining and reviewing sufficiency of documentation provided to tax authorities and identifying potential risks in audit defense.
• Supporting problem solving related to operations and assisting with compliance improvements by providing information and analysis to team members and business groups.
• Interpreting policies and procedures from state tax authorities.
• Providing coverage (back-up) cross-functional advisory support (Procurement, Accounts Payable, etc.) as required.
• Maintaining and operating SOX controls (as applicable) and maintaining SOP documents related to the indirect tax function.
• Performing research and writing regarding interpretation of tax law to various transactions. Sharing subject matters insights regarding conclusions reached within the department as well as with business leaders.
• Providing real-time feedback for front-end process improvements or reserves needed that have been discovered in audit defense work. Supporting audit reserve calculations and ensuring the establishment of adequate reserves related to audit exposures
• Assisting the Indirect Tax team with special projects, business partnering, advisory services, technology enhancements as needed.
• Implement “lessons learned” from tax authority audits to improve and enhance tax compliance and system determinations (OneSource Tax Determination).
• Reviewing documentation of use tax overpayments to support formal refund claims. Discuss overpayment improvement opportunities with the applicable department(s) to ensure that future transactions are taxed properly in the future.
• Identifying potential refund opportunities by reviewing and analyzing prior tax filings.
• Assisting with sales tax planning in an increasingly complex and changing tax environment ensuring full compliance with tax law.
• Presenting and recommending tax efficiency ideas to improve internal and external department processes.
• Ensuring business partners are aware of issues, if identified and assisting with any training, as necessary.
• Providing general support to the indirect tax and US broader tax function, as needed.

Qualifications
• Minimum 6 years of prior audit experience, specifically sales and use tax.
• An open collaborator who enjoys working and contributing to team success, building creativity with team, and inspiring progress.
• Good understanding of sales & use taxes, gross receipts tax, fuel, excise, and employment taxes and their applicability to the utility industry, and basic knowledge of the applicable federal, state, and municipal tax laws/regulations.
• Thorough experience in tax systems and the use of ERP systems. SAP and OneSource/Sabrix strongly preferred.
• Experience with tax research software, such as CCH, BNA, LexisNexis, etc.
• MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint proficiency.
• Indirect tax audit project management.
• Knowledge of general accounting concepts.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities through effective planning and execution skills.
• Strong ability to work across department and geographic boundaries, and to build cross-functional relationships.
• Exhibit high personal standards of commitment and integrity.
• A focus on quality and customer service.
• Experience within regulated utility industry is a plus.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (or commensurate experience), Taxation, or related fields
• CPA or CMI is preferred

Annual Salary

$94,000-$110,000
