Associate Director, Center for the Middle East and International Law

The Center for the Middle East and International Law (CMEIL) at George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School is looking for a knowledgeable and qualified Associate Director to work with the Director of CMEIL. The Associate Director will build out the Center's programming and content and supervise its operations. This job is an equal mixture of management and scholarly work production.

About the Position:

Responsibilities include day-to-day administration of the Center; leading and developing educational programs for students and outside constituencies (lawyers, media, policymakers); devising topics and recruiting speakers for seminars and conferences; and engaging in scholarly writing and supervising scholarly writing of others. The drafting and submission of academic papers by the Associate Director is highly encouraged. The Associate Director will also assist the executive director with research or other projects as needed.

The Center seeks to foster debate and critical engagement on international law in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on developing voices and perspectives that have largely been excluded from the academic discussion, and on challenging underexamined consensus. Past research topics have included sovereignty matters in Western Sahara and the West Bank, Turkish settlement activities in northern Syria, and religious discrimination at the Temple Mount.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree with some focus on international relations, political science, or history, though a law degree is welcome and encouraged; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Considerable relevant work experience (generally 3+ years) in think tanks or policy positions, with some experience (generally 1+ year(s)) focused on Middle East issues;
• Experience conducting and troubleshooting Zoom seminars;
• Extensive experience with social media platforms;
• Demonstrated, effective skill in communication, organization;
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Middle East geopolitics;
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office programs;
• Experience working in an academic/research center;
• Experience with media/PR issues;
• Direct experience in planning and executing events;
• Demonstrated skill and competence in rapidly producing publishable materials, including both op-eds and scholarly articles;
• Demonstrated, effective organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change;
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate simultaneous projects; and
• Availability for evening and weekend events as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Generally 2+ years in the public policy realm with some research experience;
• Experience in government policy position (legislative/executive);
• Experience with web page design with WordPress; and
• Extensive prior knowledge of Center's subject matter and relevant legal/scholarly issues.
