The Office of Legal Affairs provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance to UNC Charlotte. The Office of Legal Affairs provides services on legal matters involving or affecting the institution to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the other senior administrators of the University, and through them, to the University’s faculty and staff.
Primary Purpose of Position
Attorneys in UNC Charlotte’s Office of Legal Affairs have challenging, wide-ranging practices and must be able to handle multiple, unrelated matters concurrently. The Associate General Counsel must be able to complete complex projects both independently and with direction from the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel, and the Senior Associate General Counsels. The Associate General Counsel will be a general practitioner, with specific focus on academic affairs (including faculty relations and research-related issues), along with other areas of focus assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel and Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel based on personal experience and institutional need. Regardless of assigned focus areas, the Associate General Counsel will be expected to research, provide advice on, and draft communications and legal documents regarding the full range of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to a UNC constituent institution.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
- Advising regarding the development, review, analysis, and negotiation of policies and contracts, including but not limited to those related to academic/faculty affairs.
- Advising university officers, faculty, and staff and associated entities on matters related to law and policy, including to academic/faculty affairs.
- Carrying forward projects and serving as counsel to committees with academic/faculty affairs implications on behalf of the Office of Legal Affairs. Presenting on behalf of the Office of Legal Affairs on academic/faculty affairs-related issues to university officers, faculty, and staff.
- Advising principal University officials or internal governance or administrative bodies on their legal responsibilities and the legal implications of developing matters such as federal or administrative agency audits or investigations and employment disputes.
- Other duties as assigned. Regardless of assigned focus areas, the Associate General Counsel will be expected to research, provide advice on, and draft communications and legal documents regarding the full range of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to a UNC constituent institution.
- J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Prior experience as an attorney for a university, or relevant in-house or law firm experience required.
- At least five years of relevant, post-law school experience required.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Higher education, academic affairs, faculty relations, and/or sponsored research experience is strongly preferred.
- Excellent written communication skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in presenting complex legal principles in layman’s terms to senior administrators, staff, and faculty.
- Strong interpersonal and listening skills, and experience interfacing with a wide variety of key stakeholders; a strong collaborator and team oriented.
- Strong work ethic with a positive attitude. Self-starter, quick study, and ability to manage deadlines.
- High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity, and reliability.
- Demonstrated awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to engage and include individuals of varying ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities.
- Must have a current license to practice law in North Carolina, or obtain such license within one year of employment.
- Must be currently licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.
