Developing world-class players is a core pillar of MLS' strategy to become a League of choice in global soccer. In 2022, Major League Soccer will launch a new professional soccer league to complete the pathway from the elite player development platform of MLS NEXT to MLS first teams. The new professional league will grow the game in North America, providing even more opportunities for players, staff, fans, communities, partners, and investors. A platform for innovation both on and off the field, new league will provide a competitive environment for players on the pitch while bringing the global game closer to fans throughout the U.S. As Major League Soccer plans to launch the new professional league, we are looking for a dedicated, passionate, and experienced individual to help build, and grow the new league across all aspects of the operation. Position Summary The Vice President of Legal, MLS new professional league, will consult, advise, and provide legal counsel to the overall organization and on broad issues affecting the company, including corporate legal initiatives, complex business transactions, player relations matters and critical commercial contracts. Responsibilities Primary Responsibilities Interact with internal and external parties on behalf of the organization regarding a diverse range of legal and commercial transactions such as commercial rights acquisitions and property partnerships, media agreements (local, domestic, and international), sponsorship agreements, sales agreements, vendor/service agreements, waivers, consents, and licensing agreements. Prepare, review, draft and negotiate a wide variety of legal documents for corporate transactions including, but not limited to league expansion agreements. Advise on corporate governance and compliance concerning governing documents, team transactions and investigations, and any other legal related issues. Manage litigation and dispute resolution matters. Advise on labor-related matters. Work collaboratively with and manage outside counsel on various legal issues, providing direction, discussing strategy, reviewing work product, and managing fees. Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments to proactively counsel business partners and manage legal exposure. Additional Responsibilities Additional responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience J.D. degree from an accredited law school required Member of New York State Bar in good standing 15
years of experience Required Skills Minimum 10 years of transactional legal experience, both in-house and law firm Concrete understanding of corporate, intellectual property, privacy, sports and entertainment, and contract law. Strong interpersonal skills including ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside attorneys, senior management, and business partners. Self-starter and entrepreneurial spirit with hands-on approach towards business. Sound judgment and decision-making skills. Excellent legal and business acumen. Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives. Strong managerial skills. Superior organization and project management skills. High level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity, and compliance. Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines. Ability to get to the heart of issues quickly and act decisively. Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Desired Skills Knowledge of the sport and politics of soccer Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency) a plus
Salary Range:
$250K -- $500K+
Minimum Qualification
