Position Summary:

The School of Government seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member as a specialist in municipal law who will serve as its principal advisor to municipal attorneys.

The primary responsibilities of this position will include teaching, advising, research, and publication in the following areas:

-municipal ordinance authority, including general police powers, ordinance enforcement , and emergency management authority;
-liability and conflicts, including local government liability, public official liability, ethics for elected officials, and conflicts of interest; and,
-general municipal law, including charters, home rule, and Dillon's Rule.

Work will also include topics of government transparency, board procedures, and local government structure.

Work is centered in Chapel Hill but requires occasional travel and consultation around the state. Faculty appointments are year-round (rather than for the nine-month academic year).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

J.D., excellent writing skills, strong academic background, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Five or more years of experience in local government law.
