Job Description

This is specialized legal work in a variety of program areas within the Office of Administrative Hearings in support of the activities of Administrative Law Judges where federal or state laws and rules dictate the delivery of specific services, programs and sanctions that are determined through administrative hearings. Contested cases handled by this employee range from two party actions to complex administrative law litigation with not only the individual parties but multiple intervenors. Position performs a wide variety of legal functions including researching, summarizing, and evaluating motions, petitions, transcripts, and briefs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Position provides analysis, interpretation , and advice on a wide variety of administrative law issues before the Office of Administrative Hearings, which enables the Administrative Law Judges to make more informed, considered decisions that will result in sound decisions for judicial review.
  • Position is responsible for drafting and reviewing legal documents, including orders on pre-hearing motions and decisions as well as acting as the interface with litigants, state agency's staff , and attorneys for the purposes of screening calls and summarizing communications between outside parties and the Administrative Law Judge.
  • Position is responsible for arranging the Judge's contested cases on the Judge's regular dockets and the organization of supporting docketing documents.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Legal experience involving legal research and writing

  • Experience using a variety of legal resources and materials to find and analyze applicable statutes, cases, and rules

  • Experience comprehending and summarizing case and statutory law in draft orders or other legal documents.

  • Knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial law and procedures, particularly the administrative procedures, civil procedures, and rules of evidence.

  • Specialized knowledge of administrative law.
