Job Description

The Jail Administrator reports directly to the Sheriff and is responsible for the administration of a 147 bed County Jail ensuring that it is run in a legal, constitutionally correct, safe, secure manner while seeing to the safety of the staff, inmates and general public. The incumbent is responsible for the preparation and monitoring of the budget while at the same time, monitoring jail rental space bringing revenue back to the County. The position is responsible for the supervision of 35 to 40 jail staff, including the hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining of staff as necessary. This position routinely advises the Sheriff of the status of the jail, but the position’s work generally is not reviewed.


Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and directs all the activities and staff of the Morrison County Jail, which include full time and part time employees, and supervision of up to 147 inmates on a daily basis.
  • Supervises a staff which involves direct and indirect responsibilities for staffing, training, motivating, wage and salary administration, performance appraisal, developing goals and procedures to ensure achievement of goals.
  • Enhances County posture on EEO/ADA by making a good faith effort to recruit, select, develop and retain protected class employees.
  • Assures that all department personnel attend required training in hazardous materials and job safety as established by Morrison County and OSHA guidelines.
  • Maintains safe working conditions and practices in the Jail.
  • Responsible for training new employees.
  • Monitors Jail personnel to assure that they are following the established safety and infection control policies and procedures including body mechanics, and ergonomics.
  • Evaluates safe work practices in job performance reviews.
  • Ensures that Jail personnel actively participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills annually.
  • Responsible for ongoing training and education of Jail employees.
  • Develops Jail budget and monitors performance on a regular basis.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Business Management, or related field with 2 years experience working in a correctional setting or a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

  • The ability to use office equipment such as copy machine, hand held radios, and related computer equipment.

  • Ability to be certified and trained in basic 1st Aid/CPR.

  • Able to walk and negotiate steps.

  • Ability to crawl, bend and reach.

  • Ability to lift, carry or drag in excess of 150 pounds.

  • Have excellent vision, both forward and peripheral and excellent hearing.

  • Must posses leadership and supervisor abilities and the willingness to work with both professional and non-professional individuals

  • Must be able to prepare clear, concise reports and have the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to promote good public relations at all times.

  • Prefer experience with a broad range of labor relations issues and specific familiarity with managing in a union environment.
