The primary goal for this patent attorney is to manage a patent portfolio including preparation and prosecution of patent applications. You will work with engineers, patent counsel in Germany and in the US as well as with business units to audit and manage a patent portfolio, including in-source patent prosecution work and the nationalization of German patent applications in order to reduce costs and assist with other work, including opinions, agreements, managing outside IP counsel, Open Source Software Counseling, contracts, and litigation support. The work includes an interesting mix of automotive technologies, including software, electrical and mechanical designs for a variety of products such as brake systems, safety systems, automated driving systems, displays, communications, and telematics.
The patent counsel will report to the Auburn Hills Group Leader in the IP Americas department and assist patent counsel in the Auburn Hills office and in Deer Park, and may also support other Continental locations, and in particular IP, engineering and business units in Germany.

This position can be located in Auburn Hills, MI or Deer Park, IL.
- This position is targeted to be at the home location of the selected applicant.
- Patent Preparation and Prosecution for assigned technologies
- Nationalizing and prosecuting about 20 foreign cases per year.
- Managing outside IP counsel.
- Providing IP updates to BU management
- Responsible for controlling and tracking spending to stay within budget guidelines.
- Working with Continental's IP docket management database.
- Managing patent review committee
Requirements / Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in EE/ME/Computer Science/ Physics (or other STEM)
Juris Doctor Degree and registered State Bar member in good standing
Registered member at the USPTO
At least 7 years experience in patent law and engineering (or related)
5-8 years of patent application preparation and prosecution experience on U.S. and foreign patent filings
Extensive knowledge of USPTO and PCT rules, regulations, forms; ability to perform research on CAFC case law and in the MPEP and to share knowledge with and train others.
Strong verbal and written communication skills that adhere to Continental Business System (CBS) policy and to the IP department's highly collegial and respectful interpersonal communications culture.
Strong computer skills including an ability to actively learn and utilize software including, Microsoft Office, the USPTO's PAIR and EFS.
