You will help a business navigate complex, ever-evolving legal requirements related to employee benefits, solve compliance, design, risk, and process issues, make sound and compliant decisions, and adopt best practices. You possess excellent judgment, attention to detail, and ability to inspire and influence employees at every level, and to build trust throughout the organization and with partners and clients.

What You'll Do
• Provide prompt, practical compliance advice, best practices, and support to the business for all employee benefit-related aspects of compliance with ERISA and applicable health and welfare laws
• Advise business leaders and legal team colleagues concerning a full range of plan participant inquiries, claims, health plan compliance matters, and ERISA-based disputes and litigation; manage outside counsel to support same
• Remain current on evolving laws and apply them as a specialist and partner who provides important, proactive legal and strategic advice on complex issues relating to our business plans
• Transform complex regulations and legal ambiguities into clear, succinct, advice. Advise on and help to create and guide effective and compliant internal processes, disclosures, and procedures, balancing the need for rigorous compliance with pragmatic, creative advice to move the business forward
• Ensure that we have the right processes to help the business to grow, including recommending development, use, or implementation of technology solutions
• Support and participate in client and client prospect meetings to establish client needs, clarify expectations, develop strategies, obtain feedback, and represent the legal function
• Support sales, marketing, customer experience, editorial, client success, and company leadership teams with internal and external communications in your areas of expertise
• Research and prepare (or update) internal training and briefing documents, practice aids, and compliance alerts
• Prepare and present webcasts and live, in-person presentations on employee health plan-related topics
• Use your EQ to build trusted internal and external relationships with individuals at all levels of seniority and experience
• As requested or required from time to time, assist our 401(k) committee on employee benefits matters, including communications, procedures, and materials related to the 401(k) plan through the engagement and management of outside counsel
• Report to our Chief Legal and Administrative Officer

To Be Successful In This Role, You'll Need
• JD degree with outstanding academic and professional credentials
• Admitted to practice with a valid license to practice law in the U.S., and in good standing
• Strongest consideration will be given to candidates with 12+ years of relevant experience, including in-house experience; at least 4 years of law firm experience specializing in employee health and welfare benefits or 7 years of experience in the employee health and welfare benefits/ERISA field with a strong focus on compliance advice, particularly with respect to ERISA and ACA are desired.
• Inquisitiveness with the ability to remain current on evolving laws and to apply them to improve business practices and reduce potential risks and liabilities
• To transform complexity and ambiguity into clear, simple advice, policies, and practices, when working with non-legal internal colleagues and a broad range of people across our company
• Superior analytical, writing, and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking, and the desire and initiative to anticipate business needs and make quick, effective decisions
• To build agreement at senior executive levels and to excel in high impact/high profile situations
• Gets things done, demonstrating outstanding perspective and ability to evaluate and prioritize legal work and risk and to balance priorities and deadlines to support a growing business
• The highest standards of integrity, ethics, service, discipline, responsiveness, and accountability for client service
• Enthusiasm to accept and provide constructive feedback
• Must be strategic with genuine business acumen in addition to legal expertise

This job can be performed in a location where we have an office: San Mateo, CA, Chicago, IL, or Lehi, UT, or hired for remote work in the following states: CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, TX, UT, or WA.

The estimated salary range for this role if hired in California is $214,000-$267,000, for Colorado is $153,600-$224,000, and for New York City is $214,000-$267,000. Compensation will depend on multiple factors, including geographic location, qualifications, and experience.

Please note that this information is provided for those hired in California, Colorado or New York City only, and this role is open to candidates outside of those locations.
