About the Center:

The Mason Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinic ("M-VETS") was formally established in 2004 in response to the legal needs of deployed servicemembers after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The dual mission of the clinic is to provide free representation to active-duty members of the armed forces, veterans, and their families while offering law students the opportunity to receive supervised, practical legal experience by advocating for those who serve or have served in our United States armed forces.

The clinic was the nation's first of its kind and today provides the most comprehensive legal services of any law school veterans legal clinic in the country.

M-VETS practices in the areas of Virginia civil litigation, family law, consumer protection matters, petitions for expungement, wills and powers of attorney, as well as assisting with benefits matters before the Department of Veterans Affairs, various administrative boards, including discharge upgrades, record corrections, military pay and entitlement matters, Board of Veterans Appeals and Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.

About the Position:

M-VETS seeks a part-time staff attorney to supervise an advice and referral legal clinic at the M-VETS outpost located at the American Legion Post 139 Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

The staff attorney will hold walk-in hours during normal business hours for veterans and service members seeking legal advice related to a variety of legal issues, including, but not limited to, civil litigation, family law, consumer protection issues, criminal law, employment disputes, estate planning, expungements, military/VA administrative matters, MEBs/PEBs, discharge upgrades, Boards for Correction of Military Records, and VA disability compensation matters.

The staff attorney will conduct intake assessments of walk-in clients, provide legal advice related to the client's matter, and offer referral resources for further representation.
The staff attorney will not provide direct representation to clients.

In addition to providing advice and referrals, the staff attorney will work with M-VETS student advisors who will assist in the intake process and provide legal research and analysis support to the staff attorney.

The staff attorney will manage M-VETS student advisors, under the supervision and with the assistance of the M-VETS Director and Deputy Director.
The staff attorney position is part-time with an anticipated work schedule of 20 hours per week. The staff attorney may be assigned other duties as needed by the M-VETS Director.
Please note support will be provided for Virginia Bar Dues and Continuing Legal Education training expenses.

Required Qualifications:
Department of Veterans Affairs ("VA") attorney accreditation (or eligible to apply for VA accreditation);J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.

Active member of a state bar in good standing;Experience assisting veterans with VA disability/education benefits appeals and/or experience assisting veterans with a variety of legal issues, including, but not limited to, civil litigation, family law, consumer protection issues, criminal law, employment disputes, estate planning, and expungements;Possess ability to operate independently with minimal supervision;Have a willingness to supervise law students and provide them with guidance;Must be skillful in finding legal and non-legal resources and referrals for military/veteran community;Able to communicate effectively in writing and spoken words to veterans;Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication skills; andAbility to understand complex legal problems and develop options/solutions for those issues for veterans.
Possess judgment and decision-making skills necessary to provide legal advice to veterans.

Preferred Qualifications:
Substantive (typically three to five years) legal experience assisting veterans with VA disability and education benefits appeals.

Substantive (typically three to five years) experience assisting veterans with a variety of legal issues, including, but not limited to, civil litigation, family law, consumer protection issues, criminal law, employment disputes, estate planning, and expungements; andPrior experience supervising or teaching law students, interns, or new attorneys in a legal office or law school setting.
