Job Description

The Office of General Counsel seeks a labor and employment attorney with strong client counseling skills to support and collaborate with the Labor and Employment practice group, primarily focusing on counseling and research related to the areas of employment law, labor law, immigration matters, and university governance and policy. This attorney will have primary responsibility for certain legal matters and will support more senior attorneys in the office on other matters, requiring both the ability to independently manage all aspects of a labor, employment or other legal matter, as well as the ability to contribute as part of a team. This position will provide legal counsel and support to the University's schools, colleges, portal campuses, global sites, and administrative areas.

The position reports to the Associate General Counsel & Chief Labor Counsel. This position has the opportunity to work closely with members of the University community and requires a collaborative, mission-oriented approach to counseling. The position may supervise, on a project basis, outside counsel, legal assistants, paralegals, and interns.

The Office of General Counsel is particularly interested in candidates who have interest in (1) managing project-based work to proactively support legal and operational needs and (2) occasionally providing support, as needed, to other practice areas, such as assisting on general litigation, student affairs, commercial litigation, corporate, regulatory and governance matters and otherwise maintaining the ability to quickly research and provide assistance in new areas.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities include assisting with representing the University in employment claims and litigation;
  • representing the University in agency charges (e.g., NLRB, EEOC, OSHA, DOL, NYSDHR, NYCCHR);
  • assisting with labor issues in connection with union grievances, arbitrations, and collective bargaining negotiations;
  • esearching, analyzing, and advising on employment and labor related laws and regulations; and assisting with providing advice and counsel on employment-related practices, policies, and benefits.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from ABA-accredited law school. Candidates must be members of the New York Bar or eligible for immediate membership.

  • 3+ years related professional legal experience, strong academic and professional credentials, excellent oral and written communication and creative problem-solving skills, the ability to work collegially with diverse personnel, demonstrated judgment and discretion, and admission to the New York Bar, or eligibility for immediate admission.

  • 3+ years Professional experience within an academic institution is beneficial but not required.

  • Seeking a hands-on junior to mid-level attorney who is a strong advocate and effective counselor with the abilities, knowledge, and skills as described below: • Ability to effectively compose and edit legal briefs, pleadings, position statements and other materials. • High competency to handle, personally or with limited to moderate supervision based on the complexity of the matter, all aspects and phases of litigation in New York state and federal courts and at administrative agencies, as well as alternate dispute resolution, and oversee and manage outside litigation counsel. • Possess practical knowledge and experience in the areas of employment, labor, and equal opportunity. • Excellent written and oral communication skills and creative problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work collegially with diverse personnel. • Must be highly ethical and a team player. • Exceptional capability to effectively execute on guidance provided from senior attorneys; to apply principles of both logical and creative thinking to a wide range of practical problems and opportunities facing a complex, global institution; to respond effectively and appropriately to confidential inquiries or complaints; and to work independently as a leader and collaboratively as a member of a team. • Excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in higher education required.
