Job Description

Our products aim to do one thing: save startup founders and small business owners time, money, and peace of mind. We started by demystifying complicated tax credits, saving over $100M – and countless hours of tax code research – for founders in nearly every industry. Then, we introduced MainStreet Procurement, simplifying expense management and contract negotiation for teams without the means to do it themselves, as well as our treasury management product that helps customers earn better yields on their cash reserves. Since our sort-of viral beginnings in 2019, we’ve raised a $60M Series A (more on that later), launched three product lines (with more in the works), and grew from 3 employees to 160+.

Reporting to the CEO, the General Counsel will be responsible for leading MainStreet’s overarching legal strategy and providing innovative legal solutions to support business growth. In partnership with a team that you can build along with outside counsel, the General Counsel will be responsible for identifying and overseeing all legal areas including, but not limited to: compliance, corporate governance, origination, issuance programs and funds, employment law, privacy, and intellectual property. The General Counsel will serve as a strategic and product-oriented advisor to the leadership team as well as to the Board of Directors.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner and influential contributor to the leadership team, facilitating and driving decision-making
  • Act as a resource and thought leader on the interpretation of existing and proposed laws and regulations that could impact MainStreet
  • Oversee all legal matters and advise the senior leadership team and the board accordingly
  • Develop and implement a long-term strategy across all areas of legal, risk and compliance: including operations, commercial, compliance, corporate governance, corporate finance, litigation, employment and government affairs
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel on a wide variety of data protection and privacy legal matters, including implementing the necessary programs, policies, and ongoing reporting in accordance with global, federal, state and local laws
  • Assume ultimate responsibility for ensuring company’s compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations
  • Create a best-in-class legal ecosystem for MainStreet that is positioned to provide advice and guidance on commercial, corporate, and compliance matters
  • Provide counsel and oversight for all litigation, selecting and supervising outside counsel, judging the merits of major litigation, and approving settlements of disputes if warranted
  • Advise on legal aspects of MainStreet’s financing, including assessing and advising on current and future business structure

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Prior experience working within highly regulated industries and navigating nebulous regulatory challenges, including those pushing the envelope and charting new territory

  • Compelling and verifiable track record of success as a strategic thinker and builder in a high-growth, start-up setting

  • Proven experience partnering with a product organization on ideation, iteration, launch, creative problem solving, and ongoing support

  • Hands-on leader with the ability to attract and retain a highly motivated and talented team

  • Legal leadership experience gained in both structured corporate and entrepreneurial environments

  • Robust experience managing legal budgets and outside counsel

  • Participated in and successfully completed complex financing or other corporate transactions

  • You have a hungry, infectious personality - someone who is comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, start-up environment and determined to win

  • You are excited to both think strategically and get into the details - we are a growing team so execution and grit are key

  • You approach legal challenges as a puzzle that can be solved vs. a blockade that has to be navigated around

  • You can manage complex work streams and plan effectively across multiple initiatives

Benefits/What We offer

  • Base salary range for this position is $120,000 - $190,000 and is based upon years of experience that is commensurate with the level of the position in addition to location

  • Bonus that is commensurate with the level of the position
