Job Description

The Associate Marketing Counsel will provide legal support on a broad spectrum of marketing, advertising and policy issues concerning Campbell’s businesses. This lawyer may advise teams on product claims and substantiation as well as the regulatory compliance of the portfolio of Campbell’s iconic brands, including Campbell’s soups, V8 beverages, Pepperidge Farm baked goods, Goldfish baked snacks, Swanson broths, Prego Italian sauces, Pace salsas and sauces, Milano cookies, Cape Cod and Kettle Brand potato chips, Late July snacks, Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels, and Pacific Foods broths, soups and non-dairy beverages. The ideal candidate will be a commercially-minded, pragmatic business lawyer.

The Associate Marketing Counsel position can be based either in Campbell’s World Headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, or the Campbell Snacks location in Charlotte, North Carolina, and this individual will be a member of the Campbell Legal Department. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with numerous clients in a cross-functional, team-oriented environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advise and counsel the Marketing and R&D teams on issues relating to the development of new products and the marketing of new and existing products, including, e.g., product claims and labeling, food photography, traditional, online and digital advertising, in-store marketing, public relations and selling materials, FSIs, sweepstakes, contests, and charitable solicitations;
  • Advise of statutory and regulatory requirements and strategic intervention in the regulatory agendas of the FTC, FDA and USDA;
  • Review and counsel on Company advertising, marketing (traditional and digital) and social media executions and materials;
  • Advise on privacy and related laws that commonly impact marketing and advertising, including but not limited to COPPA and CAN-SPAM;
  • Advise and counsel on claims substantiation, including appropriate methodologies for clinical trials surveys and taste tests;
  • Strategic counsel and regulatory support for the innovation process;
  • Support of and participation in industry self-regulatory bodies, such as NAD, CARU and CFBAI;
  • Support of relationships with outside vendors such as advertising and media agencies; and third parties such as brand and product spokespersons, influencers and marketing partners;
  • Prosecution and defense of competitive challenges, including challenges at NAD and television networks;
  • Advise and counsel on marketing-related agreements, including media buying agreements;
  • Advise on marketing law and related issues and conduct due diligence in connection with acquisitions, divestitures, and other transactional matters;
  • Conduct regular compliance training related to marketing law, legal risks and relevant Campbell policies and practices;

  • Effectively manage outside counsel relationships and related budgeting matters;
  • Support organization-wide legal projects and initiatives, as necessary;
  • Provide counsel on additional matters as needed and directed by management.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.

  • A member in good standing of any state bar (if not already admitted in New Jersey or North Carolina, the successful candidate will need to obtain the relevant in-house bar admission).

  • At least five years of law firm and/or in-house experience. Marketing law experience is preferred; candidates with experience in media buying or digital marketing, and related privacy issues is ideal but not required.

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Demonstrated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to interact effectively and efficiently with business partners daily and operate with limited supervision.
