NRDC is seeking a Director of Video, Multimedia to work with the Communications team in our New York, San Francisco, Santa Monica, or Washington, D.C. office.

Position Summary

This is a hands-on position for experienced professionals. We're looking for a proven visual storyteller who can oversee the visual direction of all videos produced by the organization, generate impactful and resonant story ideas, and manage a small team of video editors, freelance producers, animators, and shoot crews. This candidate needs to be a collaborative team player who can respond to strategy and story direction coming from multiple places throughout the organization, providing appropriate creative for the audience and distribution channel.

This visual leader must be able to produce strong video content utilizing a range of techniques and visual styles. Knowledge of NRDC's core missions is required and the successful candidate must have a broad knowledge and curiosity about environmental issues.

The successful candidate must have the necessary skills to produce, edit, and shoot video content. They can tailor videos for success on social media and can also develop powerful, emotionally resonant narrative arcs for medium-length videos (1 to 8 minutes). This position isn't strictly limited to video production, though, and the successful candidate will be able to art direct animations and produce still photography shoots as needed. This individual should have experience developing budgets, in addition to hiring freelance production crews, directors of photography, and video editors.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented creative and a highly collaborative team-player. Strong communication skills are essential. A dedication to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion-in both interpersonal interactions and within visual storytelling-is a must.

This position reports directly to the Multimedia Director.

Responsibilities

Produce short-form and medium-length video content including, but not limited to, reels for TikTok and Instagram, animations for acquisition ads and fundraising emails, and brand videos to on-location productions.
• Manage freelance and staff video editors. This includes setting daily duties and expectations, giving direction, providing feedback, documenting and rating performance, nurturing top performers, and coaching for improvement.
• Refine and develop audience- and brand-appropriate presentation of NRDC content on all channels including, but not limited to, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and NRDC's website in order to advance our environmental advocacy and institutional fundraising goals.
• Identify original and intelligent storytelling opportunities that advance the narrative on NRDC's priority issues. Assemble narrative arc of some videos, but at other times, supplement already established narrative arcs established by other teams at NRDC with brand-appropriate visual direction.
• Coordinate and produce video shoots: set and refine visual direction for videos, assemble talent and crew, provide project estimates, oversee budgets.
• Manage and execute the technical aspects of video production including audio mixing, color correction, format conversion, and file management, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
• Research, source, and license video and photo content to be used as b-roll from stock agencies, wire services, and private individuals for videos when needed.
• Hire a range of freelancers for projects as needed: video editors, producers, animators, stylists, directors of photography, etc. Negotiate rates and initiate contracts.
• Collaborate with Multimedia Director and other Multimedia team directors to unify NRDC's brand aesthetic and continuity of content.
• Facilitate productive team dynamics between the Video team and all other teams, like the larger Multimedia team, Social Media team, Editorial team, Programs and Development departments.
• Stay current on evolving best practices for videos within the digital space. Execute deliverables based upon these and educate Multimedia Director, Editorial Director, and Senior Director, Content with this information.

Qualifications

Required
• Commitment to NRDC's mission and values.
• A minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a video editor or producer at an agency, news website or non-profit.
• A portfolio that demonstrates a wide variety of engaging video storytelling techniques.
• Proven track record of working cross departmentally throughout a complex organization.
• Expert in Adobe Creative Suite.
• Experience with animation/motion graphics. Awareness of building HTML5 ads a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple daily and long-term projects.
• Highly collaborative and communicative leader.Successful experience in guiding teams and overseeing the work of others.
• Constructive problem-solver and strategic thinker.
• Understand and use social media platforms and tools including, but not limited to, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.
• Connections within the creative industry including production houses, editors, videographers, photographers, and stylists.

Preferred
• Bachelor's degree, preferably in photojournalism, broadcasting, filmmaking or other disciplines that emphasize visual storytelling and multimedia production and/or editing.
• One or more years in a leadership position managing staff.

For this position, the salary is $114,000 to $130,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.
