Job Description

Kite, a Gilead Company, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel cancer immunotherapy products designed to harness the power of a patient’s own immune system to selectively target and kill cancer cells. Our core technology involves the genetic engineering of T cells, or white blood cells, to express either chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) or T cell receptors (TCRs) for the treatment of advanced solid and hematological malignancies.

The Intellectual Property (IP) Group at Kite is seeking a patent attorney with experience in the biotechnology and life science industry who thrives in a rapidly growing, high-volume, fast-paced, high-performing and collaborative corporate environment to join its team.

This role reports to the Head of IP at Kite and while working onsite in Santa Monica is preferred, we are also open to this role being remote for anyone who is US-based. Responsibilities will include (i) drafting and prosecution global patent portfolio in immunology and cell therapy areas; (ii) conducting freedom to operate and patentability assessment; (iii) reviewing and negotiating the IP provisions in agreements; (iv) providing IP support to a broad range of groups including R&D, Corporate Development, and external collaborations; and (v) working collaboratively with the legal department and cross-functional groups around the globe.

Job Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications (US and foreign patent offices).
  • Draft and review documents for oppositions, observations, and other patent office proceedings.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate reviews, provide legal opinions and consultation.
  • Develop patent portfolio and strategy worldwide.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage outside counsel.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of assigned projects.
  • Participate in the drafting and negotiation of agreements relating to intellectual property.
  • Provide IP support and due diligence review for business development activities.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctorate and admission before a State bar or fully qualified legal credentials in geography of operations.

  • Registered before the USPTO.

  • Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Life Science or pharmaceutical; advanced degree is preferred.

  • 7+ years of industry and/or law firm experience; experience as a Patent Agent would be considered.

  • Strong client service orientation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to identify issues and seek solutions to advance project priority.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic fast-paced environment.

  • Solid understanding of genetic, protein, antibody, and recombinant technologies; experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries preferred.
