Job Description

Cisco, the world’s leading networking, communications and security company, is on a mission to empower an inclusive future for everyone. We’re proud to be consistently recognized as one of the best workplaces in the world by Fortune and Great Place To Work, and we are looking for outstanding people to join our legal team.

What You’ll Do

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Cisco legal team directly supporting the Worldwide Sales business on Data Security critical issues. Do you find that accurately addressing vulnerability management in a contract is much more exciting than simply committing to implement privacy-by-design principles? Do you feel that carefully defining the term ‘security incident’ is more interesting than just agreeing to notify of data breaches when required by law? In other words, do you like data privacy… but love data security? If so, Cisco is looking for an experienced attorney or contracts negotiator specialized in cybersecurity to form part of a small team of highly-trained legal experts providing Cisco’s customer-facing attorneys and contract negotiators with a ‘tier 2’ level of support for customer negotiations and critical issues. In this role, you will
• Provide global escalation and subject matter expertise support to Cisco contract negotiators for data security and data protection terms in customer-facing commercial contracts.
• Assist Cisco contract negotiators in internal and customer calls to identify and resolve data security and data protection issues.
• Develop and deliver periodic trainings to Cisco’s contract negotiators on data security and data protection issues relevant to customer-facing commercial contracts.
• Update and expand documented guidance (playbooks, job aids, FAQs, etc.)
• Work closely with Cisco’s Security & Trust Organization to call out and resolve technical data security and data protection issues in customer-facing commercial sales contracts.
• Liaise with other subject matter experts and stakeholders within Cisco’s Legal organization (Product Legal, Regulatory Affairs, Services (CX), Technology Acquisitions) as necessary.
• Assist in identifying and resolving data security and data protection quality control issues in customer-facing commercial contracts.
• Assist in the onboarding, training and general development of new team members.

General expectations for this role
• Deep understanding and thought leadership in the area of data security and data protection regulations, industry practices and procedures.
• Substantial hands on experience directly reviewing, drafting, and negotiating data security and data protection requirements and terms in contracts with customers and partners.
• Substantial knowledge of relevant global regulations (GDPR, CPPA/CPRA, EBA Banking Guidelines) and how they are implemented (beyond the letter of the law), and a commitment to continuously maintain and keep this knowledge current.
• Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience in working with standard corporate security practices, IT processes, and SaaS/cloud services.
• Outstanding contract negotiation and drafting skills, with the ability to discuss complex issues to business clients and customers in a clear and simple manner both in writing and orally;
• Deep general knowledge of applicable law;
• Focused attention to detail and ability to work independently;
• Strong organizational and social skills and desire to make legal processes more efficient;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across functions, cultures, and time zones with deep respect for inclusion and diversity.
• Ability to quickly identify, describe and advocate for acceptable risk to enable desired business outcomes, including excellent legal and business judgment;
• Customer and client-centric approach, demonstrating respect and a positive attitude under all circumstances;
• ability to effectively assist in hiring, managing and developing team members.
• Experience and familiarity with data privacy such as GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy laws, as well as as-a-service offerings.
• Exceptional customer service, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with superior contract drafting skills.

Your Qualifications
• Bar admission in any jurisdiction with good standing, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience at a law firm and/or in-house (the ideal candidate will have both law firm and in-house experience).
• CIPP-E and CIPP-US certification strongly preferred.

#WeAreCisco, where each person is unique, but we bring our talents to work as a team and make a difference powering an inclusive future for all.

We embrace digital, and help our customers implement change in their digital businesses. Some may think we’re “old” (36 years strong) and only about hardware, but we’re also a software company. And a security company. We even invented an intuitive network that adapts, predicts, learns and protects. No other company can do what we do – you can’t put us in a box!

But “Digital Transformation” is an empty buzz phrase without a culture that allows for innovation, creativity, and yes, even failure (if you learn from it.)

Day to day, we focus on the give and take. We give our best, give our egos a break, and give of ourselves (because giving back is built into our DNA.) We take accountability, bold steps, and take difference to heart. Because without diversity of thought and a dedication to equality for all, there is no moving forward.

So, you have colorful hair? Don’t care. Tattoos? Show off your ink. Like polka dots? That’s cool. Pop culture geek? Many of us are. Passion for technology and world changing? Be you, with us!
